The call out feature works wonderfully, and is responsive and clear. Motion detection was is also quite good, and push notifications are immediate. It delivers detailed HD video with rich colors, and its black-and-white night vision is well lit and shows very good contrast. The Vivint Ping's unique call out feature and overall performance make it an excellent addition to the Vivint Smart Home security system. The motion sensor worked as advertised, sending a push notification and initiating a recording without fail. I received a notification within seconds of pressing the call button, and both video and audio was crisp, with no noticeable lag. The Ping's calling feature worked beautifully. Moreover, recorded video looked and sounded just as good as the live stream.

There was none of the pincushion distortion we saw with the Blink Home Security Camera System, and audio quality in two-way communications was clean and easy to understand. Black-and-white night vision video was also highly detailed, with good contrast and balanced lighting. Daytime color was rich and saturated, and image detail was excellent.

The Ping delivered top-notch 1080p video quality in our tests. Back at the panel the screen informed me that the camera was connecting, and after a minute or two it was connected and the LED turned white. The light turned green, indicating the camera was ready to connect. I tapped Add Camera and then Use WPS, and pressed the button on the camera for five seconds.

I entered my installer code (you can call support if you don't know yours), tapped the Installer Toolbox selection, and selected Cameras. I plugged in the camera, waited a few minutes for the LED ring to flash red and green, and navigated to the Settings menu on my control panel. The Ping is usually professionally installed when you order it with your Vivint system, but I installed it myself quickly and easily using instructions found online on the Vivint support page.

You'll have to use the touch-screen panel to adjust motion sensitivity, create motion trigger zones, and install the camera. At the bottom of the live feed screen is a Clips button that takes you to the Activity page where you can view all recorded video. A microphone icon below the live feed lets you initiate two-way audio with the camera, and there's a button for taking a snapshot and another that takes you to the system's Arm and Disarm screen. You can have the camera send a notification when motion is detected and when a video clip is recorded, enable Privacy mode, and enable HD video for the best possible image quality. For example, you can have the Ping record a clip when it detects motion and store it in the cloud (cloud storage is part of your Vivint plan), or when another device, such as a smoke alarm or window sensor, is triggered. With the mobile app you can view live and recorded video, answer a call from the camera, receive push notifications, adjust settings, and create rules.

You can also access the camera via the touch-screen panel that comes with the system or from your PC using the web console. The Ping uses the same mobile app as other Vivint Smart Home devices. If nobody answers the call, the camera will terminate it after 45 seconds. When finished, you can press the button on the camera or in the app to end the call. On the other end, tapping the notification takes you to a live feed where you can press the microphone icon to conduct a video call with the person at the camera. When you press the button, a chime will sound and the LED ring will begin flashing blue as the camera sends a push notification to the mobile device. The top holds a button used for connecting the camera to your network via WPS (Wireless Protected Setup) and for initiating communication with any mobile device that has the Vivint app installed, but you must have Administrator rights to the Vivint Smart Home system to accept calls.
